Howler Monkeys

Photo: Male black howler monkey in a tree

Howler monkeys live from 15 – 20 years in the wild. They are found in tropical parts of Central and South America. These monkeys are known for their howl. When a howlers howl they can be heard up to 3 miles away. The male monkeys have large throats and specialized, shell-like vocal chambers that help to turn up the volume on their distinctive call Howler monkeys are the biggest of the New world monkeys. These primates have prehensile tails, so they can use it as an extra arm by gripping or even hang from their tail. Only New world monkeys can have such a tail. These tails especially help Howler monkeys because they are rarely on the ground. They are Omnivores, but mostly eat leaves. Howler monkeys usually have beards and long, thick hair which can be black, brown, or red. Red howler monkeys are the most common. The size of the head and the body of this monkey is 22 to 36 in and the tail by itself is usually 23 to 36 in. A howlers weight is usually between 15 and 22 lbs.

More Monkeys

My sister and I don’t share a room anymore, so I have a bunk bed to myself. My stuffed monkeys are very lucky they get one full bed (the bottom bunk) to themselves. Well… I guess there are a couple of different animals with them, but at least they don’t have to share with me anymore. I sure have a lot more room without my 70 or so (I can’t remember when the last time I counted was) monkeys. I wonder what they do all night, now that I’m not down there to control them 😉

My monkeys

What do you think they do all night?
